20 small modular reactors to be built in Ukraine - Energoatom

During the hostilities, Russian aggressors caused significant damage to the energy system of Ukraine. The country is faced with the issue of restoring and strengthening the energy sector, as well as ensuring its security. Informs Freedom Matrix.

According to Energoatom, the state enterprise NAEK Energoatom and the American company Holtec International have signed an agreement on the construction in Ukraine of up to 20 nuclear power units with SMR-160 reactors.

It is noted that on April 21 Energoatom President Petr Kotin and Holtec International President and CEO Chris Singh signed an agreement on cooperation in the deployment of small modular reactors.

Kotin signed the agreement in Kyiv and Singh in Camden, New Jersey, USA. The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and Vice President of Holtec International for activities in Ukraine Riaz Avan.

According to Energoatom, the agreement provides for the construction of up to 20 SMR-160 reactors in Ukraine, the implementation of the first pilot project and reaching the minimum regulated reactor power and connecting to the grid until March 2029.

Energoatom expects that the construction of small modular reactors will help strengthen Ukraine's energy security and help replace thermal power facilities destroyed as a result of Russian attacks.

The SMR-160 is a 160 MW pressurized light water reactor that uses low enriched uranium as fuel and has the flexibility to produce process heat for industrial applications and hydrogen production.
