Republican Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio has been nominated by his party for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Congress.

Details: Jordan, 59, was nominated for the post after Kevin McCarthy resigned and another contender, Stephen Scalise, withdrew his candidacy.
It became clear on Thursday that Scalise would not receive the support of 217 out of 221 Republicans in the House of Representatives, but it remains to be seen whether Jordan will be able to get it.
Former US President Donald Trump endorsed Jordan just days after McCarthy's ouster. Jordan was one of Trump's most vocal defenders when the former president faced impeachment twice during his 2017-21 term.
Jordan is a founding member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, a group that former Republican Speaker John Boehner called "legislative terrorists."
Jim Jordan is also against additional US aid to Ukraine.
